December 23rd, 2019

Isolated in the Arctic North, CROWN, the international advanced microbiology research facility, is due for its annual personnel shift. With Christmas coming up, having spent the last year in this remote, secluded laboratory, researchers and auxiliary personnel from all over the world are dying to return to civilization and warmth. Rich countries are sending a new batch of their best and brightest to carry on the amazing and dangerous reasearch, locked in an arms race with mother nature. The next pandemic may be the last, if the world was caught unawares.

There’s no taming the North Pole, though. The majestic yet annoying Aurora Borealis has been jamming the satellite communications with CROWN for days. A frequent occurrence in this part of the world. One which Google promised to solve by installing a land cable that would connect it with PEARL (the Canadian research station in Eureka, Nunavut) right after completing their Curie undersea cable deployment, well underway by now.

The CROWN project ops center based in Reykjavík went forward with the scheduled exchange. The Mi-8T helicopter, so generously provided by Russia, landed without incidents and the welcoming committee did their utmost to make the new arrivals feel at home in record time, so that the relay handoff ceremony proceeded as hastily as humanly possible. Amidst all the chatter, meeting of old colleagues, handshaking and tight spaces, one piece of strange news surfaced: for some unknown reason, the Chinese delegation simply up and left a few days ago.

Not entirely unexpected, but curious nonetheless, this unexplained behavior was not unheard of when it came to China. Not more than couple of months back, a Chinese military convoy dropped in unanounced, with presents and letters from the families of the Chinese scientists stationed there. The IUMS and the ISC will be losing a few nights over the latest incident, though. A helicopter came out of nowhere and picked them up with no prior warning, days before their upcoming return to their homes and families. It did seem kind of random but maybe not unsettling.

At least not for the old roster. A year in the Arctic and the thought of the imminent release from the cold grip of the frozen white hell will do that to you. As soon as the last year’s team left, the new one started scrambling. A clue digging rush was sweeping the compound. There had to be a file, a print, a log, a note - a scribble! - somewhere, that could shed some light on what was going on. The race was on.

December 30th, 2019

Mere days before the turn of the decade and barely a week after the personnel exchange, CROWN was shook by an unexpected series of events, related to the sudden departure of the Chinese delegation. What appeared to trigger it all was the video shared anonymously on NewronComm (the internal messaging system featuring peer-to-peer audio/video/text communications and advanced conference and resource sharing options). Nobody could tell how it got there, whether it was found among the video logs or was sent from outside the facility, but it painted a grim reality for the people in the research station.

Image

The blurred video showed the rushed, panicked confession of a Chinese woman, a supposed scientist, which someone claimed they recognized as previously occupying CROWN’s biological agents and anti-biological warfare research position. She told a tell-tale story about how her gov’t infiltrated the program with politically appointed scientists, sent to the far away station to covertly work on bio-engineered viruses to be used as weapons. They chose not to use inland facilities because of running the risk of biological catastrophes in the unlikely event that pathogens were accidentally released into the wild. That wasn’t even the worst of it.

The approach imposed to her by the Chinese Science Directorate had two phases: 1. selecting a common virus easily modifiable through gene editing techniques and vastly increasing its deadliness, and 2. removing its virulence altogether, its ability to replicate and infect others, so that it could be released with pin-point accuracy against designated targets, without risking of turning a surgical attack into a pandemic that affected everyone indiscriminately.

What could go wrong, right? Not what you’d expect, though. After she completed her part of the assignment, a colleague of hers specialized in microbiological genetics took over with his own set of orders to follow. Only things went awry from the second he decided to abandon good ol’ human judgment and go all in with trusting the calculations of the quantum computer that suggested the steps to be taken and the modifications to be made in order to meet whatever the Chinese Political Committee had requested.

The lab rats subjected to the altered virus infection developed an uncannily synchronized behavior. They appeared to act - and react - like a single organism, and soon, as the fingers of one’s hand - they were collaborating in attempting to subdue the environment, their cages, mazes and tunnel labyrinths where they were being tested and evaluated. Introducing a stimulus on one side of the maze would instantly trigger a reaction in rats on the other side, tens of meters away. They began using objects as tools, to construct domes where they could be shielded from prying eyes, and to build ramps and storied structures meant at bringing them closer to the maze wall edge.

When the Chinese gov’t got word of this development, at a moment’s notice, they dispatched the military which, under the pretext of an innocent gift exchanging tradition, covertly extracted the virus samples from their scientists. However, for reasons unknown, her geneticist colleague would not give up on his experiments, and continued working with the rapidly evolving virus and his quadrupedal avatars. It soon became clear that rodents were not the only ones subjected to hive-mind behavior when exposed to the virus.

Although dogs and pigs, for some reason, were immune to it, cats, sheep and even monkeys were not. At this point, he could not keep his research a secret from his Chinese colleagues any longer, and their gov’t extracted all of them without even caring for appearances. That would prove not to be the end of it, though.

The whistleblower knew for a fact that the begruntled researcher would not have it. He had hidden a couple of viral storage devices somewhere in the compound, to be retrieved later in case he was forced to give up his work to the authorities. He was not the only one. The woman in the video claimed to have had stashed the virus herself under a misleading label in the cryogenic storage, but in her case, deadly as may be, it was the un-evolved specimens. Perhaps they can be used to figure out a vaccine, in case the weaponized virus plans were put into action.

At this point, the video ended abruptly. What came instantly to everyone’s mind were the yet unconfirmed rumors coming from their peers working in China, that the Wuhan province was the theater of a strange play, one where the Chinese CDC had the lead part, and where a great many episodical actors from the general populous were being quarantined or removed entirely, all under the utmost secrecy.

A bigger picture began to take shape in the minds of the researchers. The mainland had to be informed immediately about the latest developments. A group of scientists rushed to the communications room to request for a satellite link to be established. Once inside the comm center, they stumbled upon the dead body of the comms technician, laying down on the floor. Around them, the sensitive satellite dish calibration and link acquisition equipment was fried. Smoke was still coming out as it had literally been burned, fused together with the help of a bunch of snowmobile jumper cables that tapped into the high-voltage electricity outlet that powered the dish emitter.

Shocked, they returned to the lobby only to find out that a colleague of theirs, CROWN’s microbial cytologist, was found dead on an infirmary bed where he had managed to crawl on his own, apparently. His death would prove to be an irreparable loss, especially when dealing with this situation. If the transmisionist was stabbed, the scientist’s body wasn’t exhibiting any apparent causes of death. Having no shortage of trained experts, they ran an extensive set of tests looking for the culprit.

A few hours later, there it was: a virus showing obvious traits related to those that caused SARS and MERS not so long ago, but which apparently destroyed lung cells at a much, much accelerated rate. Being scientists and naming new forms of life was a part of the reason, they turned once again to Latin and so, the coronavirus was born.

Morale was shattered. Panic ensued. The boring year ahead turned nightmarishly improbable. If what the Chinese woman was saying proved true, a disaster was about to happen, the likes of which the world had never seen before. Between the severed communication link and the dead bodies, something really wrong was going on. Someone – or something, an unidentified danger was threatening their very lives, and they had to root it out, before it was too late.

. . .

Unbeknownst to any, before this commotion, somewhere, in some lab, someone had touched something seemingly unimportant and totally unintimidating. And they became one.

December 30th, 2019 (continuation)

What CROWN was dealing with was a situation that apparently was triggered by the alarming report made by a concerned Chinese scientist that risked her personal safety to let the world know about the mind-boggling danger that the station and the world was facing. If that video was everything there was, would've been ignored or facts-checked before even being considered as true.

The two deaths, however, proved that facts have landed, arriving from the far away planet of impossibility. Under such urgent and unclear threats, cut off from the rest of the world, the scientific committee of CROWN decided that effective immediately, harsh but necessary measures would have to be taken at once.

They needed to reach a better level of understanding of whatever they were facing, from a microbiological point of view, while providing personal safety for everyone in the station. There were no weapons on site, to begin with, but either way, their community was one of scholars, not of murderers. They had to find a way to neutralize the aggressors without harming them.

The solution presented itself. CROWN’s cryogenic storage facility was the most advanced in the world, and took little power to operate because of the already low environmental temperatures. First of all, they ran a complete station decontamination cycle. Then, they decided that each day, in order to avoid personal exposure to the unknown contagion, they would confer and debate the matter over NewronComm. Leaving the safe environment of their living quarters was also limited to a narrow list of reasons.

So, starting the next day, each and every person on the station had to contribute to this team effort but also to be subjected to in-house inquiries. Whoever was found guilty by means of general vote, would be put in cryo-stasis until authorities could arrive to take over the investigation. Hopefully, the cytologist and the comms technician would prove to be the the only victims of this unorthodox war.

It was close to midnight at CROWN, but on the other side of the world, it was already tomorrow.

December 31st, 2019

On December 31st, China alerted the WHO to several cases of unusual pneumonia in Wuhan, a city of 11 million people. The virus was unknown.

It's Night 1 - until Sunday, April 12th, 20:00 GMT/UTC

Please send the targets.

Terrible way to spend New Year's Eve, but it had to be done. The hardest day of CROWN's team's life; they are used to fighting bugs, not humans. And now, they have to fight both. At least, everyone's been accounted for... for now.

Nobody dies.

It's DAY 1, until Thursday, April 16th, 20:00 GMT/UTC
There are 28 players remaining. 15 votes required for instant lynch and no lynch, 10 votes required for deadline lynch.

Good luck, everyone!

Young man, there is no reason to question Joesatri. He's a fine worker and has always punched in on time. Unlike the current generation that has gotten everything handed to them. These darn millennials are so oversensitive. When I was your age we worked for a living and did not cast aspersions on innocent hard working folk. Now tell someone tell me how I open these .pdf files...

It takes a certain type of person to choose to isolate themselves here, away from the loudness of the world, to pursue the noble goal of science. But since we've arrived here two people have died. I understand the desire to lash out in terror, but this is not the time. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself: nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. We need information and then to follow the evidence.

Sounds grand, poetic even.. but also like someone who's trying to sound like he has something important to say in order to mask something he may be trying to hide. Until more "information" and "evidence" surfaces, vote: Siderite.

Joesatri receives a warning. You can get 2 warnings before getting a penalty. 3rd warning means elimination.

Please remember to check your e-mail in the game morning. Please confirm, by replying to me, the receipt of emails with results or instructions triggered by night time abilities effects (like, for instance, not being allowed to speak during the day, or w/e!). Please remember not to quote anything from any email you received.

Thank you.

On that note, i will unvote SilveXtru, since i am rather unwell and actually cannot vote today...

So instead of random voting, anyone want to consider why there is no death?

The sheer luck of preventing the kill is, what? 1/28? I can't really see the benefit of the Mafia not killing on the first night. The chances of getting caught are what? Equally 1/28?

So who is a strategic master mind, and wants to share some of his/her ideas on the situation? Cause for now, all I can think of, is sheer luck.

To be honest it probably is sheer dumb luck, and unless the townie healer wants to come forward which would be a big no no on the first day there’s nothing there to talk about.

So either mafia forgot to send in a target, or healer got lucky. What is there to discuss from that cause I certainly don’t want mafia to have any idea this early who the townie healer is.

Speaking of terminology, which sense of the "mob" are you using here, Escaped Convict? How do you know he is not part of the mob himself (in the criminal sense of the word)? I find your coaching him odd, and the implied belief in his innocence disturbing--especially as the latter doesn't seem intentional.

Sanders, your attitude strikes me as unconstructive. It's unavoidably hard to get meaningful discussion going in day 1, but rather than helping point out scummish behavior and putting pressure on suspects, you would rather have us discuss fruitlessly (or even dangerously) about the night events. Speaking of, your math is also dubious: you did not subtract the number of mafia members from the possible targets.

Whatever dude. So I vote for you and you just vote back rather than explain why you think no lynch is the better idea...

Sure not suspicious at all

I tend to agree with radwulf here. It's as if Sanders is hoping that the medic might blow his cover by engaging with his line of inquiry.
Consequently, I will:

unvote: radwulf
and
vote: Sander
